Algonquin acts as Philidelphia in new movie

Algonquin and the new ACE building became movie celebrities 2 weeks ago as they became sets for the film Fugitive@17 where the T-Building and new ACE building acted as a Philidephia high school, university and police station. The film, which is a production of local Ottawa company Zed Filmworks, tells the story of a 17 year old on the run from authorities in attempt to find a killer. Algonquin College's new ACE building became a visual focal point of the film as filming commenced on all floors, overlooking the wall of water and pod. The film is due to air in the US on the lifetime network in possibly a year. I caught up on set with actor Casper Van Dien, star of such films as Sleepy Hollow and Starship Troopers, where we snapped a quick photo, and he quoted one of his favorite movie lines. "C'mon you apes, you wanna live forever!"

Winter Orientation

Tonight is Winter Orientation and we are so excited to see all the new faces! We have a lot of things planned for everyone to get you introduced and welcomed into the Algonquin Community.
We will start off the evening with Service Tours at 4pm, where we will show you around the college and provide you with information on all the great services that Algonquin has to offer.

Orientation will kick off at 5pm in the gym where we will be having live entertainment, refreshments and some great information about getting involved at Algonquin. Our guest speaker for the evening will be Skate4Cancer founder, Rob Dyer. He is a great role model for all students, and teaches you to always aim for the best and always go for your dreams. During Orientation we will also be doing a live twitter feed for all you tweeters out there! Check us out at http://www.twitter.com/algonquinsao to follow us tonight!
To finish off the evening, students will have their Program Orientation at 6:30, where the teachers will meet with their students for the first time. This is a great opportunity to learn about the expectations and requirements of the programs and teachers.

We hope everyone can make it out tonight and we are so excited to welcome you to Algonquin!

Winter Semester Events

We know you are dying to know what we have planned for the new semester quickly approaching; and we don't blame you! We have some new awesome events planned and some old favourites making a comeback! We have many great events coming so make sure you write these events down in your calendar!

First up we have another great workshop for the Algonquin community to partake in. This time we will be learning all about expanding our horizons in our Social Media Workshop. We will learn how Twitter, Blogger, Facebook, and many other social media outlets can help you and your career! This event is taking place Tuesday, January 11 at 7pm in T303. This is a free event!

At our next event, Luca Lazy Legz is coming back to Algonquin for another free show! He will be performing for us Tuesday, January 18 at 12pm in the Marketplace Food Court.
Women's Self Defense will be taking place Thursday, January 20, at 2:30pm in the Studio above the Gym (A121). This is a great opportunity for women to learn how to defend yourself in dangerous situations! (A $10 deposit will be required when you register at the SA office, but you will be refunded at the start of the event)

Winter Tubing, a favourite from last year, will be having another trip out on Saturday, January 22 at 12pm. Tickets will be sold at the Residence lobby for $5; this includes your transportation and tubing ticket!
Our second workshop of the month is our Photography workshop! This is a free workshop for novice to regular camera users. Come out and learn what all those functions you never use on your camera do! This event is taking place on Monday, January 24 at 6pm in room B159.

Guess what Algonquin? Dirty Bingo is making a comeback! Drag Queen Zelda Marshall will again be hosting our Dirty Bingo in the Observatory, Tuesday, January 25 at 8pm! Win Fun Toys! This event was a huge success last semester and you won't want to miss it again! Dirty Bingo is a Free +18 event.

Finally, the last Monday of the month is our free Movie Night. This time we will be playing Jackass 3D! Come out and have a laugh with us and enjoy free popcorn. This event will be taking place Monday, January 31 at 7pm in room C144.

We hope to see you at all our exciting events this month to get you back into your College Community after the holiday season. Keep a look out on our facebook and website for more events to come!
